미국에 들이닥친 극단적인 한파로 기절한 바다거북 수천 마리가 주민들에 의해 구조됐다.
텍사스 바다거북 재활·보존 비영리기관 '씨터틀(Sea Turtle Inc)'을 비롯한 현지 단체 및 개인들은 텍사스주 해변에서 기절한 바다거북들을 구조하고 있는 소식을 지난 16일(이하 현지시간) SNS에 공유했다.
지난주 텍사스주를 포함한 미국 중남부에는 30년 만에 영하 20도에 달하는 기록적인 강추위가 찾아왔는데 이를 견디지 못한 바다거북떼가 실신한 것이다.
냉혈동물인 바다거북은 기온이 영상 10도 아래로만 내려가도 움직임이 둔해지며 추운 날씨에는 일명 '콜드 스턴(cold stun)' 상태에 빠져 활동성이 급격히 줄어든다. 저체온이 된 바다거북은 약 1cm 깊이의 물에서도 익사할 수 있다.

이에 텍사스 사람들은 바다거북을 살리기 위해 발 벗고 나섰다. 자원봉사자들은 한파로 기절한 수천 마리 바다거북을 자가용과 보트로 운반하는 등 사우스파드리섬의 구조센터로 옮기는 데 힘을 합쳤다.

씨터틀에 의하면 21일 기준 콜드 스턴 상태에 처한 바다거북은 5000마리를 넘어섰다. 24시간의 노력 끝에 그중 2200여 마리는 우선 바다로 되돌려 보내는 데 성공했다고 단체는 22일 가장 최근 소식을 전해왔다.
한편 바다거북은 세계자연보전연맹(IUCN) 적색목록 '위기'(EN, Endangered) 단계에 처한 멸종위기종이다. 미국을 강타한 이번 한파는 기후위기로 인한 북극 제트기류의 약화가 원인으로 꼽혔다.
