'제발...' 인간이 지른 불 피하지 못한 판타나우 야생동물 상황

세계 최대 늪지 판타나우에서 발생한 산불로 야생동물이 신음하고 있다. 

브라질 판타나우에서는 이달 들어 총 5,815건의 화재가 발생했다. 지난해 같은 기간 대비 3배가 넘는 규모인데 화재 원인은 대부분 인재로 추정된다. 가축 사육을 위한 목초지를 확보하고 꿀을 채취하기 위해 불을 지른 것이 대형 화재로 번진 것이다. 

브라질 정부에 따르면 판타나우를 이루는 전체 삼림 중 15%는 이미 불에 타 없어졌다. 판타나우가 있는 마투그로수두술주의 헤이나우두 아잠부자 주지사는 지난 14일(현지시간) 비상사태를 선포하고 연방정부도 진화 작업 지원에 나섰으나 불길은 잡히지 않는 상태다.

걷잡을 수 없는 화재 속에 야생동물 역시 큰 피해를 입고있다.

판타나우는 세계적으로 손꼽히는 재규어 서식지다. 재규어는 멸종위기등급 취약(VU, Vulnerable)종으로 국제표범류보호단체 판테라(Panthera)에 따르면 이번 화재로 이미 200여 마리가 넘는 재규어가 죽거나 화상을 입었다. 

판타나우에는 재규어뿐 아니라 포유류 159종과 수천종의 동식물이 서식하고 있다. 많은 동물애호가와 환경단체, 자원봉사자가 동물을 구하기 위해 판타나우에 뛰어들었으나 도움이 절실히 필요한 상태다. 

악어와 뱀은 불에 타 죽은 채 발견됐고 멸종위기종 '오실롯'도 길가에 죽은 채 방치됐다. 재규어를 비롯한 많은 동물이 발바닥에 화상을 입어 제대로 걷지도 못하며 비틀거리다 바닥에 풀썩 쓰러진다. 가축 떼들은 뻗쳐오는 불길에 놀라 이리저리 뛰어다니다 다치기 일쑤다.

"온몸에 화상을 입고 축 늘어진 모습이다" 물로 열기를 식혀주는 자원봉사자 손길에도 반응이 없다.

No dia 18 de setembro de 2020, o biólogo @d.sergio.freitas trabalhava voluntariamente no combate ao fogo do Pantanal quando viu um quati em perigo. O animal, que tentava escapar do incêndio, corria pelo chão quente da floresta, muito debilitado. Mesmo sabendo que o animal tinha poucas chances de sobreviver, o biólogo tentou ajudá-lo até o fim. Emocionado, Sergio, que também é doutorando em ciências naturais, correu por entre as árvores carbonizadas com o animal no colo. No caminho, gritava ofegante por ajuda, até que, em outra parte da mata, encontrou os também biólogos @raphasantos_birding, @eduardopatrial, @leonardopatrial_bahiabirding e o escritor @tiberiope, todos voluntários na luta contra os incêndios no Pantanal. Os cinco homens viajaram até a região com o próprio dinheiro. Sem ganhar um tostão, decidiram que deveriam, eles próprios, lutar para tentar salvar um dos biomas mais ricos e frágeis do Brasil. Passam os dias em meio a um calor infernal, aguentando fumaça, seca e cenas tristes como a do quati. É de gente assim que nosso país — e o mundo — precisa. Já se foi o tempo em que a floresta valia menos que o gado, que a soja, que o minério. Chegou a hora de defender o que restou, dar um basta à política exploratória e chamar todos para a luta contra essa ideologia predatória que tomou conta do Brasil e de muitas partes do nosso planeta. #salveopantanal #pantanal #quati #coati @sandiskextremeteam

These fires are far bigger than the California fires but they’re getting little attention. _ As per my previous post where I said the leading cause of #Wildlife decline is #AnimalAgriculture because clearing land for cattle grazing and cattle feed is causing habitat loss, this is another example. _ Humans deliberately set these fires to clear land for cattle farming for the meat industry and now they’re burning out of control causing terrified wild animals to suffer unimaginably while attempting to escape. _ As always I care about getting funds directly to those helping as opposed to giving them to massive organisations where they’ll just get swallowed up in administrative costs so donated funds will go to local rescues, individual volunteers, veterinarians and grassroots organisations who are on the frontlines.
